To Sit in Awe

"You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end." Luke 1:31-33

Can you imagine your response to an angel that just told you three wild ideas? You will experience a miraculous birth, your son will be the Messiah of the Hebrew people, and he will be the eternal king over everything forever. That might be cause for a microphone to drop as you watch the angel who delivered that news walk away.

The only reaction I believe I could muster would be to be completely awestruck.

To be visited by an angel would be enough to give anyone pause. But to learn that the God of the Universe was choosing you to be the one who would be the parent of the Savior of the world... now that would make anyone stop and sit for at least a moment in wonder.

How often do we allow ourselves in our busy days to stand in awe of the power and plans of God? What if it was you that God had chosen instead of Mary? I believe that question is what makes this story come amazingly alive to me. Because if God's plan was to use a common, average person, like Mary, to radically shift the course of humanity's future then what would stop Him from asking me to be a part of something like that as well?

So before you and I move too quickly to Mary's response, let's sit in speechless awe of this: God wants to use you and I to be a part of His cosmic, eternal plan. Before you ask the why or the how, just sit and meditate on the sheer magnitude of that idea.

Sitting in awe with you,

Todd
