“I am doing a great work and cannot go down.
Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down?”
Nehemiah 6:3
I have a problem with getting distracted. You have a problem with getting distracted. Distractions are part of life. One of mine is football. I just cannot get enough of watching, analyzing, and enjoying football! Now, football is not bad, but it’s definitely not THE most important thing in life, or so I’m told :).
I don’t know what that MOST important thing is for you this year. But if you were able to figure that out and focus your attention on that great work, you could make a significant difference this year.
Nehemiah knew his great work, and he relentlessly focused on it with God’s help. But, like any great work, there was someone or some thing trying to keep him from accomplishing it. So, Nehemiah had to find the courage to tell his distractions that what he was doing was very important.
But Nehemiah didn’t just tell them this once, he had to tell them this same thing four times! And that must have been so hard to do!! But Nehemiah's courage to continue minimizing his distractions helped him to complete the work God had given him to do.
So how does this story relate to you? There is something you know you NEED to accomplish this year, and that is your great work. Whether it’s a project you need to finish, a relationship you need to restore, a debt you need to pay off, or a fear you’re trying to overcome, there is an important something that is YOUR great work this year.
So how will you minimize your distractions to do that great work? Here is a process that may help: 1) ask God to help you identify your great work (I’ll talk more about this next time); 2) write it down somewhere you will see it every day; 3) set a realistic date to complete it or work on it; 4) remind yourself that distractions will come; 5) tell someone you trust about your great work (this is someone who won’t nag you, but someone who encourages you and would love to know how much progress you’re making).
The work you do each day is important to God, no matter how big or small it may seem. Let’s focus together this year to do the work He has given us to do!
Minimizing distractions with you!
Todd
